The Tencent Academic and Industrial Conference (TAIC) will be held in Stockholm, Sweden on July 14th, gathering top AI researchers and young professionals from around the world. Synced is organizing the conference, where Tencent’s seven core business groups and invited academics and industry professionals will share insights on the current state of AI technologies.
Chinese Internet giant Tencent is also a leading AI development company with a strong focus on academic research. Tencent had 17 papers accepted by ICML 2018 and 15 papers received by IJCAI 2018. The impressive achievement reflects the company’s ongoing efforts with AI technologies and reflects CEO Pony Ma’s strategy that “Chinese Internet companies should focus on the demographic dividend in the first half of the game, and should move forward to technical development in the second half.”
Tencent’s strategic blueprint for AI in recent years has been combining scientific research and business applications:
- Tencent Social Network Group (SNG) subsidiary Youtu Lab was established In 2012 with a focus on image processing, pattern recognition, machine learning, data mining, etc.
- In 2015, Tencent partnered with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to establish the Tencent – Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Joint Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (WHAT LAB).
- In 2016 the Tencent AI Lab was formally established to drive the company’s AI R&D. Many papers were published which had significant impact on industry.
- In late 2017 Tencent’s SNG announced plans to build a quantum laboratory to enable Tencent to further its development of advanced technologies.
- In March 2018 the Tencent Technology and Engineering Group (TEG) launched Robotic X, a robotics lab in Shenzhen.
Technology breakthroughs require not only heaps of scientific research, but also strong connections between interested parties. Major AI conferences ICML and IJCAI will both be held mid-July in Stockholm, bringing AI professionals from around the world to the Swedish capital. TAIC has been organized to coincide with these gatherings to enable face-to-face discussions between experts from various fields on current hot topics regarding AI research and implementation.
Tencent is sending a star lineup to TAIC, where the company’s seven core business groups will demonstrate applications of the company’s cutting edge AI technologies. Synced will bring you exclusive reports from the conference.
